What is your opinion: should a Lead Web Tracking Expert aim to become indispensable?

I believe the exact opposite.

A Lead Web Tracking Expert is not a bottleneck — he builds the system so others can move forward

Tracking is often presented as a technical discipline: tracking plans, dataLayers, GTM, SDKs, GA4, server-side, QA, monitoring…

But the real challenge starts somewhere else.

Reliable tracking is a team system

Reliable tracking requires teams with different goals, languages and constraints to work together: Product, Tech, Data, Analytics, Marketing and Business.

The role of a Lead Web Tracking Expert should not be to become the mandatory checkpoint for every implementation.

It should be to build a system where everyone knows:

  • what needs to be measured;
  • why it needs to be measured;
  • how to implement it;
  • how to test it;
  • how to detect regressions;
  • how to evolve tracking without breaking trust in the data.

Technical expertise is necessary. It is not sufficient.

Of course, this requires strong technical expertise.

But it also requires standards, governance, knowledge sharing and a shared measurement culture.

For me, success is not hearing:

“Ask him. He’s the only one who knows how it works.”

Success is hearing:

“We know how it works. We know why. And we know how to evolve it.”

The Lead builds the system, not the bottleneck

At that point, the Lead hasn’t become less valuable.

The Lead has done the job and can focus on the next challenge instead of remaining the bottleneck.
